IPTV on Kodi: How to Use the PVR IPTV Simple Client Add-on

Kodi is a free, open-source media centre that runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, Android TV and Fire TV. On its own, Kodi doesn’t include any TV channels. With the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, though, it becomes a capable IPTV player for your subscription — with a full channel list, a program guide and a consistent interface across all your devices. This guide explains when Kodi is a good choice, how to set it up safely, and how to keep it fast.

Why use Kodi for IPTV?

  • One app for IPTV and your own media — films, music and photos stored on a drive or network.
  • A full TV guide and channel list in Kodi’s TV section.
  • Works the same way across many platforms, from a laptop to a Fire TV Stick.
  • Highly customisable — skins, menus, remote mappings and more.
  • Free and open-source, maintained by a large community.

The trade-off: setup is more technical than dedicated IPTV players, and on-demand movies and series are less convenient than in Xtream-based players such as IPTV Smarters. Kodi is ideal for people who enjoy tinkering, or who already use Kodi for their own media library.

A note on add-ons and builds

Only install add-ons from Kodi’s official repository. Third-party “builds” and unofficial add-ons can be unstable, insecure, slow your device down, or provide access to content without permission. They are also a common source of malware. PVR IPTV Simple Client is in the official repository and does one simple thing: it plays the playlist you give it. That is all you need for IPTV.

What you need before you start

  • Kodi installed from the official kodi.tv website or your device’s app store
  • An M3U playlist URL from your IPTV provider
  • An XMLTV EPG URL, if your provider supplies one
  • About fifteen minutes

How to set up IPTV in Kodi

  1. Install Kodi from the official kodi.tv site or your device’s app store.
  2. Go to Settings → Add-ons → Install from repository → PVR clients.
  3. Select PVR IPTV Simple Client and install it.
  4. Open the add-on’s Configure menu.
  5. Under General, set location to Remote path and paste your M3U playlist URL.
  6. Under EPG, paste the XMLTV EPG URL from your provider, if supplied.
  7. Restart Kodi. Open TV from the main menu to see channels and the guide.

Useful PVR IPTV Simple Client settings

  • Cache M3U at local storage: speeds up loading after the first time.
  • Refresh interval: how often the playlist is reloaded; a daily refresh is usually enough.
  • EPG time shift: adjust if programme times look wrong.
  • Channel logos: enable if your playlist includes logo links.
  • Catch-up: available on some services and channels; check with your provider.

Navigating TV in Kodi

Kodi’s TV section has three main views: Channels, a list you can scroll and filter by group; Guide, a timeline grid of programmes; and Recordings and Timers, used only if recording is available. Press the context-menu button on a channel to add it to favourites or hide it. Groups from your playlist appear as channel groups, which you can reorder in settings.

Tips to keep Kodi fast

  • Hide channel groups you don’t watch in the playlist settings.
  • Set the EPG to cache locally so it doesn’t re-download every time.
  • On Fire TV and low-power boxes, keep the default skin rather than heavy custom skins.
  • Disable add-ons you don’t use.
  • Keep Kodi updated through official channels.
  • Clear Kodi’s thumbnail cache occasionally if it grows very large.

Kodi on different devices

Device Where to get Kodi Notes
Windows kodi.tv or Microsoft Store Great on a desktop or home-theatre PC
Mac kodi.tv Allow the app in macOS security settings on first launch
Android / Android TV Google Play Runs well on recent devices
Fire TV Official channels Use the default skin for best speed

Using Kodi with a remote

Kodi works with keyboards, mice, game controllers and TV remotes. On Fire TV and Android TV, the standard remote handles most navigation; the menu or “context” button opens options on a channel. On a computer, a cheap wireless remote or the free official Kodi remote app for phones makes the TV section much more comfortable from the sofa.

Kodi vs dedicated IPTV players

If you mainly want live TV with a guide and also keep a local media library, Kodi is excellent. If you want the easiest possible setup, fast channel surfing with a remote, or a polished movie and series library, a dedicated player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters is usually simpler. Read our IPTV player guide to compare.

Troubleshooting Kodi IPTV

  • “No channels”: check the M3U URL in the add-on settings and restart Kodi.
  • Empty guide: confirm the EPG URL, then clear the EPG data in PVR settings and restart.
  • Slow loading: enable local caching and hide unused groups.
  • Buffering: see our buffering guide; try increasing Kodi’s video cache in advanced settings.

FAQ

What is the best IPTV add-on for Kodi?

For a subscription you already have, the official PVR IPTV Simple Client is the standard, safe choice.

Are Kodi builds safe?

Third-party builds are often unsafe and unstable. Use official Kodi and official add-ons only.

Does Kodi include free channels?

No. Kodi is a media player; you need a subscription from an IPTV provider.

Can I use Kodi on several devices?

Yes. Set it up on each device; choose enough connections for screens that play at the same time.

Is Kodi legal?

Kodi itself is legal, open-source software. What matters is the content you use it with — use it with your own media and a subscription you pay for.

Can Kodi record IPTV?

Recording depends on your provider, the channel and the PVR add-on. Ask support if recording matters to you before relying on it.
