IPTV EPG Explained: How to Get a Working TV Guide

An EPG (Electronic Program Guide) is the TV guide that shows what is on now and next for each channel. It’s what makes IPTV feel like real television instead of a long list of streams: you can see programme names and times, read descriptions, plan your evening and, with some players, set reminders or watch catch-up. This guide explains how IPTV EPGs work, what makes a good one, which players display it best and how to fix the most common guide problems.

How an IPTV EPG works

Guide data is usually delivered in the XMLTV format — a structured file listing channels and their programmes with start and end times. Each channel in your playlist has an ID that is matched to the guide data. When the IDs match, your player shows programme titles, times and descriptions next to the right channel.

With an Xtream Codes API login, most players load the EPG automatically from the same server. With an M3U playlist, you may need to add a separate EPG URL in the player’s settings. Read M3U vs Xtream Codes for more on the two formats.

What makes a good IPTV EPG?

  • Coverage of the channels you actually watch
  • Several days ahead, so you can plan
  • Daily updates so changes are reflected
  • Correct times for your time zone
  • Descriptions, not just titles
  • Fast loading in your player, even on a streaming stick

Why the guide matters so much

Without a guide, IPTV is a list of channel names. You flick through them hoping something interesting is on. With a good guide, you can see at a glance what is playing across your favourite channels, spot a match starting in ten minutes, or find a film later tonight. For many households, a reliable EPG is the difference between IPTV feeling like a hobby and feeling like a proper TV service.

Players with the best EPG view

TV-style players such as TiviMate on Android TV and Fire TV are known for their full grid guide. Kodi’s TV section also shows a full guide. Section-based players such as IPTV Smarters show a guide per channel and a grid view. See our IPTV player guide.

Player style Guide view Best for
TV-style (e.g. TiviMate) Full grid, several days Channel surfers
Section-based (e.g. Smarters) Per channel + grid Mixed live and on-demand viewing
Kodi Full grid and timeline Customisers
VLC None Quick playback only

How to load the EPG in common players

  1. Xtream Codes login: add your login; the guide loads automatically. If it doesn’t, use the player’s “update EPG” option.
  2. M3U playlist: open the player’s EPG settings and add the EPG URL your provider supplies.
  3. Set the guide to update daily.
  4. Check the time offset matches your time zone.

Fixing common EPG problems

The guide is empty

  • Refresh or update the EPG in the player’s settings and wait a few minutes — large guides take time to download.
  • For M3U playlists, check you have added the EPG URL.
  • Restart the player.
  • Free up storage on the device; some players fail to save the guide when storage is full.

Times are wrong

Adjust the EPG time offset (or time shift) in your player’s settings and check your device’s own time zone. Around daylight-saving changes, guides can briefly appear an hour out.

Some channels have no guide

Not every channel has guide data, especially smaller or regional channels. If an important channel is missing, let your provider’s support team know.

The guide shows the wrong programmes

The channel may be matched to the wrong guide ID. Report the channel name to support. Some players also let you manually assign a guide channel.

The guide makes my device slow

Reduce the number of days the guide stores, hide categories you never watch, and clear the cache.

EPG and time zones explained

Guide data is usually published with times in a standard reference time zone. Your player converts those times to your local time using your device’s time-zone setting, sometimes with an extra offset you can adjust. If your device’s time zone is wrong, every programme will appear shifted — so always check the device settings first. Travelling with a phone or a Fire TV Stick? The guide may shift when you change time zones; adjust the device time zone or the player offset to match where you are.

Daylight-saving changes can also cause a temporary one-hour shift until the guide data refreshes. If that happens, update the EPG manually from the player’s settings.

Catch-up and the EPG

On channels where your provider supports catch-up, the guide is how you access it: scroll back to a programme that has already aired and select it. Catch-up availability depends on the provider and the channel, so check with support if this matters to you.

Tips for a great guide experience

  • Create a favourites group and open the guide on that group for a short, useful view.
  • Set reminders for matches and premieres where your player supports it.
  • Use the guide’s search, if available, to find programmes by name.

Zorba IPTV includes an Electronic Program Guide. If your guide doesn’t load, message our support team with your device and player name. Request a free 24-hour trial (subject to availability) to see the guide in your own player, and choose a plan on our pricing page when you’re ready.

FAQ

What does EPG stand for?

Electronic Program Guide — the on-screen TV listings.

Do all IPTV services include an EPG?

No, and quality varies a lot. Ask before you buy and check it in a trial.

Why does my EPG disappear?

Usually because it hasn’t been refreshed or the device ran out of storage. Update it in settings and free up space.

How many days does an IPTV guide show?

It depends on the provider and your player settings; several days ahead is common. Showing fewer days can make older devices faster.

Can I use an EPG from somewhere else?

Some players allow external EPG sources, but channel IDs must match your playlist. The guide included with your service is usually the most reliable choice.
